The gifts or the giver?

Matthew 6:33 says

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

So often we seek ‘all these things’, be it food, clothes, money etc. some of these are legitimate needs, but some of these may be wants. Eg you may need food, but so you really need to eat a fancy restaurants? You may need clothes, but do you need to have the latest fashion items? We also seek other things, be it a good job, a good life partner, etc.

In any case, we seem to seek ‘all these things’ and only when these needs (or wants) are met, do we then seek God.

I have to confess that I too sometimes have this superficial and self-centered faith that demands things from God, and not demand God himself. It is like the child who grabs the sweets out of his father’s palm and runs off, savoring the sweets and ignoring the father.

God is a good father who gives us good gifts. But more than just giving us what we need (and sometimes even what we want), what he wants from us is to seek him first and to love him supremely – more than anything else.

Oh God, help us seek you the Giver rather than just ‘all these things’ for they never satisfy! May we realize that be seeking you first, we will be given all things.
