Qualities of a Christian Wife

When I think about the qualities of a Christian wife, I immediately think of Proverbs 31, but in 1 Peter chapter 3, there’s an amazing passage about the qualities and behavior of a godly, Christian wife. Really interesting, read on….

1 Peter 3:1 “Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behaviour of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewellery and fine clothes. 4 Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.”

Qualities of a godly wife: Submissiveness and possessing true beauty.
Verse 3 Reminds me of proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
That’s the beauty of it…one may not be able to do much about her external appearance, but anyone has no excuse for being unable to improve one’s inner qualities (in this case, having a gentle and quiet spirit, I.e. not being harsh or quarrelsome)
Verse 7 tells husbands to protect their wives ( and love them, of course!) and to treat them with respect , as together they’ll inherit the gracious gift of life. And a warning is in place here, as husbands who don’t do so will have their prayers hindered!
