Christmas is also referred to as Xmas, and unlike the former which contains the word ‘Christ’ in Christmas, Xmas does not contain the word Christ, or does it?
I did a quick search on Xmas through Wikipedia and I quote:
‘There is a common misconception that the word Xmas is a secular attempt to remove the religious tradition from Christmas by taking the “Christ” out of “Christmas”. However, this is not the case as the X comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, translated as “Christ”.
Well, well, well… so the use of the word Xmas was a little controversial at times.
Nevertheless, I personally prefer the use of the word Christmas, because to me, Xmas just diminishes the importance of the word ‘Christ’ in Christmas. Yeah, I know the X stands for Chi, the first letter of Christ, but I guess nobody really knows what the X stands for nowadays! Really, Christmas is all about the coming of Jesus Christ in the form of a human baby.
So the real question is not whether you’ll be celebrating Christmas or Xmas, but this:
Will you be celebrating Christmas, with or without Christ?
God bless you all, and I wish you a blessed Christmas 2011
